What is a Glow-Up Challenge and How Does It Work?

When it comes to a glow-up challenge, it’s simple and yet multifaceted. For starters, according to Merriam-Webster, a glow up is a dramatic change to someone’s looks.

However, it’s more than just about looking good. I found that a true glow-up is a positive change in someone’s mental, physical, emotional, and overall way of life.

While social media focuses on appearance, it’s more than that. This kind of challenge is a plan that breaks down all your glow-up goals into actionable steps.

Before You Start: Your Glow-Up Plan and Checklist

Before we go further in your 30-day challenge, it’s important to have a glow-up plan. Consider what goals you want to achieve.

So first, think about what areas you want to focus on. Use the glow-checklist to list areas you want to work on.

A few examples can be:

  • Beauty, such as skincare and makeup
  • Wellness, such as prioritizing sleep
  • Self-care, like adding a Self-Care Sunday to your glow-up schedule
  • Lifestyle, such as joining fitness classes
  • Prioritizing me-time

Make a list of areas you want to improve on. Whatever glow-up ideas you have, think of them from a place of love.

Do these before starting.

Beauty and Skincare Tips for Your Glow-Up Challenge

When it comes to a glow-up aesthetic, beauty routines often are central.

However, when it comes to this challenge, it’s important to create realistic beauty habits.

Whether you want clear skin or are looking for face glow-up tips, it’s important to choose a consistent skincare routine over expensive products.

Use your glow-up challenge checklist to list important steps for an ideal routine. For example:

  • SPF
  • Hydration
  • Sleep
  • Hair Care
  • Hygiene and nail care

All these aspects of your beauty routine will make it easier to upgrade with the right glow-up hacks or products.

Glow-Up Challenge Mindset Tips for Real Confidence

One of the most important aspects of learning how to glow-up is developing confidence.

With it, you may end up feeling pressure to have an unrecognizable glow-up that may look unattainable to you.

There is nothing wrong with a glow-up inspiration, but it shouldn’t pressure you to be someone you’re not.

So, just remember the reason behind your glow-up motivation should be to look and feel your best.

After all, confidence can drastically improve the rest of the areas of your life, too. So, think of focusing on the following aspects:

  • Stop comparing yourself to others
  • Gratitude journaling
  • Going on a social media detox
  • Prioritizing time for yourself

The Ultimate 30-Day Glow-Up Challenge

This 30-day glow-up challenge is designed to help you reach your full potential from a place of kindness.

Additionally, these ideas can fit well into your current glow-up schedule if you have one.

Get ready for a boost of sustainable habits that improve appearance, confidence, wellness, and lifestyle.

Day 1: Set Up Your Glow-Up Goals

Based on the areas you’d like to work on, it’s time for a simple glow-up planning.

After deciding which area to focus on, break your goals down into smaller sections.

For example, if you are working on your fitness goals, you can start by taking photos before you start. Afterwards, decide what your goals are.

So, if getting toned is your goal, start by lifting small weights a couple of times a week.

Additionally, if you want to upgrade your skincare routine, start by using a face mask weekly.

Day 2: Create a Morning Routine

Start waking up early to start one aspect of your goal list. First, decide what time to wake up each day.

Afterwards, start with light habits like:

💧Drinking warm water in the morning

😮‍💨Doing some simple stretching to loosen your body

🧴End with a simple skincare routine.

These 3 habits can help you slowly get into a consistent routine before attending to the rest of your day, without the rush.

Day 3: Deep Clean Your Space

The third day of your glow-up challenge is about decluttering your space and wardrobe.

To get a glow-up aesthetic, go through your space and start cleaning up small areas at a time. For example, in your room, you can start looking into tidying up your room.

Put items back where they are supposed to be.

In the kitchen, make sure you start removing dishes in small intervals instead of letting them pile up.

Afterwards, observe how it makes you feel. After all, clean environments can improve mindsets.

Day 4: Start a Skincare Routine

For a glow-up routine, start with the following simple skincare routine:

  • Cleanser

This step is the foundation for your skincare routine. It will help remove any remaining products on your face to start on a clean slate.

That way, products will be able to absorb into your skin.

🫧So, if you are acne-prone, using a gentle detox cleanser can help regulate oil control and prep your skin.

💧For dry skin, using a cleansing cream, gel, or balm can help your skin be ready for more products without leaving it stripped.

🌿Sensitive skin types can use a calming cleanser that helps ease irritated skin.

  • Serum

This product adds nutrients to your skin.  Consider adding the following serums to your routine:

🍊Vitamin C– brightens skin and protects against free radicals

🪷Niacinamide– helps regulate oils and reduce blemishes

💮Rose water and Hyaluronic acid– adds hydration to dry skin

The job of a moisturizer is simple: it’s to keep your skin protected from dryness and dehydration.

Additionally, it helps seal all the serums in so they can work well with your skin.

This is the most important step to end your routine with.

Sunscreen helps protect your skin from skin damage from UVA and UVB rays, as well as free radicals that also contribute to skin damage.

Make sure you wear it every day!

For extra face glow-up tips for your evening routine, use the following steps:

  • Start with a makeup remover in the form of a makeup-removing balm or micellar water
  • Follow with the cleanser you use for your morning routine, a serum, and finish off with a moisturizer.

Day 5: Drink More Water

Drinking water is one of the easiest glow-up tips. Water helps flush toxins out of your body and helps with healthy weight management.

So, for a beauty routine boost, here are a few recipes you could try.

🍋Boil water and drink it warm with a bit of lemon juice since it contains vitamin C, which can help keep your skin clear.

🥒For cucumber water, use a glass jar with previously boiled water and add a few slices. This recipe promotes deep hydration for your skin.

🍎Water with apple cider vinegar and honey. It also helps improve your skin’s hydration levels and helps you maintain a healthy weight.

Day 6: Move Your Body

Start with small light movements to implement some exercises.

For example, if you just want to get into the habit of just moving, walking for 5-10 minutes per day.

Also, if you want to have a more solid workout routine (e.g., a 30-minute one), I personally love Pilates.

Other popular workout options include strength training if you’re looking to build muscle.

Day 7: Digital Detox Day

This step can strengthen your mindset and confidence, improving your glow-up core.

We all know how social media influences glow-up culture. If you feel easily swayed by how your journey should be, consider taking a break from social media.

That way, you won’t feel pressured to fit one standard but focus on yours.

For a more in-depth guide, check out my post below on how to take a social media break.

Day 8: Hair Care Reset

This day is about taking time out to care for your hair. Consider using a 3-step routine: shampoo, a hair mask, and ending with a leave-in conditioner.

Using a hair mask instead of a normal conditioner will give your hair extra nutrients for even healthier hair.

Day 9: Improve Your Sleep Schedule

Sleep is one of the most important habits to include in your glow-up schedule.

That’s because sleep helps your body recover after workouts and helps with skin renewal.

It turns out that beauty sleep is a real thing. So, ensure your priority is getting 7-9 hours every night.

Your skin and mental health will thank you.

Day 10: Journal Your Thoughts

Having a healthy mindset is part of an effective glow-up.

Journaling can help you pour out your thoughts that may have been clogged up.

So, when it comes to your journey, write about how your glow-up challenge has been going so far.

For example, how has starting a fitness routine changed your relationship with your body?

Or how has a social media detox helped clear your mind?

Just be honest about how you feel.

Day 11: Upgrade Your Diet

Now this one may sound extreme, but it isn’t. Instead of throwing everything away and eating just plants, start from a gentle place.

For starters, examine your diet. How can you slowly replace foods that don’t make you feel good?

An example is starting small, like replacing sodas with drinking water instead.

Or buy fruits instead of potato chips.

The point is to make small, healthy steps over time.

Day 12: Practice Positive Affirmations

This step is about how you choose to treat yourself while on this journey.

Speak positive affirmations to yourself while looking in the mirror. Additionally, it will work well as a source of glow-up motivation.

This means speaking nicely to yourself.

That means saying well done for showing up for yourself, despite how much or little progress you’ve made. Here are a couple you can start with:

  • Showing up is enough
  • I am doing the best I can each day
  • I love who I’m becoming in this process
  • It will be worth it in the end

Day 13: Organize Your Closet

Today is a continuation of your previous day of deep cleaning your space.

So, once you’ve decided to give away items and clothes that don’t fit your ideal glow-up aesthetic, it’s time to organize what’s left behind.

Take time out to organize your remaining clothes and shoes in neat piles and place them into storage containers.

Furthermore, you can arrange them according to color groups for a more aesthetic look.

For a more in-depth step-by-step guide, check out my post below on 7 quick decluttering tips you can use.

Day 14: Learn a New Skill

One of the best glow-up tips to boost your mental health is learning a new skill.

In fact, research shows that learning a new skill can help reduce depression, anxiety, and stress.

So, what would you like to learn? How to knit? Or learning a new language?

Skillshare has an array of skills you can learn soon, starting with a free 30-day trial.

Whether business or just wanting to learn a hobby, get started on your goals today.

Day 15: Take Yourself on a Solo Date

Now this day is one of those glow-up ideas that boost self-love.

Take yourself out to your favorite restaurant whilst wearing a cute outfit.

However, if going out isn’t your thing, create an indoor date.

For example, you could organize a mini picnic in your home with all your favorite snacks while enjoying a movie.

Also, add some snacks from all over the world for a more exciting time.

Day 16: Facial Massage and Self-Care Night

Another way to enjoy budget-friendly face glow-up tips is to do regular facial exercises.

Not only are they relaxing, but they can also boost your skin’s health.

That’s because facial exercises encourage lymphatic drainage, leading to less facial puffiness.

The best part?

Your hands are all you need, or with the help of a gua-sha tool.

With this tool, you’ll be able to learn more specific techniques to help with areas of concern.

Day 17: Improve Your Posture

This one is something that I’m working on.

Sitting at a desk all day or being busy on your phone can lead to poor posture, sometimes known as tech-neck.

However, there are simple glow-up hacks you can use to improve it. For instance, you can start with posture exercises you can do daily.

Additionally, you can also use a posture pump to help train your back to remain straight.

Day 18: Romanticize Your Life

For some glow-up inspiration, start romanticizing your life.

Now, this isn’t about daydreaming about what you don’t have but finding joy in your daily routine.

For example, instead of just going about your day, appreciate the small moments like:

☕Enjoying your favorite cup of coffee or tea

👚Wearing your favorite loungewear after a long day

📖Snuggling up with a book and a comfy blanket

Day 19: Declutter Toxic Habits

One of the best ways to master how to actually glow-up is rooted in your daily habits.

Looking into habits that may be limiting your progress needs to be at the center.

For example, if you want to start exercising and you find yourself procrastinating, ask yourself why.

Is it because you struggle to wake up early?

Well, consider waking up a few minutes earlier or placing your sneakers out before bed so you get ready faster in the morning.

So, going through each bad habit can help you to not only be honest with yourself, but also find a solution to each.

Day 20: Create a Simple Fitness Routine

I know that fitness can sound a bit overwhelming, especially for beginners. However, you can start with 4 simple steps:

👟Stretch before working out to prepare your body for the workout.

👟Proceed with your desired workout. Whether it’s walking for 20 minutes, a 30-minute jog, a 15-minute beginner Pilates class, or a cardio workout.

👟Do some cool-down stretches to help calm your body.

👟Keep your body hydrated to curb dehydration after your workout.

Day 21: Practice Gratitude

Knowing how to be grateful during the process is a crucial part of the glow-up core.

That’s because being grateful will remind you of what is going right instead of what still needs to be done.

Also, practicing gratitude is great for mental health.

To learn more, check out my post below on gratitude journaling ideas.

Day 22: Refresh Your Style

Another way to enjoy your glow-up challenge is to look at your current style.

First, you need to decide what style you want.

If you’re into athleisure, think of adding hoodies and pants. Or if you want to improve your casual style, shop for neutral-colored clothes for everyday wear.

Or do you want to improve your feminine style, add dresses to your style?

Also, add loungewear for days when you just want to chill out at home.

Day 23: No Complaining Challenge

This simple habit is great for adding some glow-up inspiration. Complaining can set you back.

When you complain, not only do you look down on your progress, but you can end up being hard on yourself.

If you’re not careful, you might end up throwing all your progress away and not see this glow-up challenge through to the end.

You don’t want that now, do you?

Day 24: Read or Listen to Something Inspiring

This habit is one of my favorite habits.

That’s because learning from others has really helped me to improve my mindset.

You can get the same glow-up inspiration by reading inspirational books or listening to audiobooks for self-improvement.

Another bonus tip is to use your journal to write what you’ve learnt from these books.

If books aren’t your thing, podcasts can also be a great source of inspiration.

Day 25: Prioritize Rest

On the contrary, this may sound, but rest can be productive.

That’s because rest reminds you that you’re human. Although I’ll admit that it’s a bit of a challenge for me.

So, taking a break isn’t only good for your daily life but also can play a part in beauty routines.

Rest, especially in a form of sleep, not only helps your body repair itself but also your skin.

Ever wondered how you wake up with a glow after a good night’s sleep? That’s the wonder of beauty sleep.

So, make regular rest a priority, whether it’s a 15-minute nap, chilling out, or sleeping for 8 hours.

Day 26: Practice Confidence

Another important mindset trick is being confident in yourself.

Part of reaching this unrecognizable glow-up is learning how to stop comparing yourself to others.

That’s because comparison will make you feel like whatever you do isn’t good enough, even though you’ve probably done a lot more than you realize.

For a more in-depth guide, check out my post on how to stop comparing yourself when insecurities seem loud.

Day 27: Try a New Healthy Habit

Now that you are almost at the end of this 1-month glow-up challenge, consider adding a new healthy habit to your existing routine.

It doesn’t have to be overwhelming.

For example, once you’re settled into your fitness routine, consider adding another healthy habit like deep breathing to calm down after a long day of work, and journaling to write out what may be on your mind.

For a more in-depth guide, check out 6 journal ideas you can start with.

Day 28: Reflect on Your Progress

Now it’s time to look at how far you’ve come. Use your journal to reflect on the following questions:

  • How do you feel about yourself since the beginning of the challenge?
  • What new habits have you adopted in your routine?
  • How has your self-confidence improved?
  • What limiting beliefs do you want to let go of?

Day 29: Plan Your Future Goals

Now that you have gotten used to your glow-up guide, it’s time to consider looking at other areas you want to work on.

So, if fitness and mindset were the main goals you worked on, think of adding 1 new habit every month while still upkeeping your current routine.

For example, if beauty is your thing, try using the next month to learn how to do a basic makeup look.

Or, if mindset is more central, start with affirmations first, then slowly add a self-improvement book in the following month.

Day 30: Celebrate Your Glow-Up

Saving the best for last. This part is about looking back at the initial part of your journey.

Have you compared your before and after looking at your reflection list? Also, think about how hard you worked and celebrate consistency.

The most important part of having the best glow-up is to maintain these good habits. Finally, do something fun for yourself to celebrate your progress.

Spoil yourself with a gift card or buy some fragrance to add to your style, or give yourself an at-home spa day.
