So, what is self-care?

Well, let’s first start by understanding what self-care is. According to a study, self-care is defined as things you do to enhance your overall health and well-being.

Adding a personal flavor to the term, I would also describe self-care as habits that a person does regularly that are meant to enhance their mental health and sense of self as well.

That’s what self-care means to me, and I hope you can relate to it, too.

This can range from using simple self-care products and building daily habits to truly feel a sense of nourishment and serenity.

I get it, the whole “set off activities “part sounds so broad that it could give one a headache.

But stay with me, I’ll guide you. Let’s break this concept down even further.

Why is self-care a necessity?

Self-care sounds so simple, doesn’t it? Just take time out for yourself. Easy right?

Well, not quite, and that is why you need to get your self-care routine today.

And I’m here to guide you in the process.

According to Gitnux, only 6% of adults engage in self-care daily. That, my friend, is all the more reason to start having a daily self-care routine so we can up the stakes and enjoy the wonder of self-care.

I am confident that you have found the right assistance with the following guide.

Aspects to consider for developing a daily self-care routine

1. Self-care can include your daily habits

A set of activities refers to what you do regularly to enhance your health and well-being.

However, how I understand this is that in the realm of self-care, these certain activities are implemented done so regularly.

Therefore, in return, they help enhance your overall health and well-being.

2. Having a daily self-care routine should cater to your needs

These sets of activities could range from a lot of things. In my self-care journey, I have realized that self-care isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach but should cater to my specific needs.

I don’t need to do everything at once.

And just like me, you can pick and choose that ‘set’ that works for you.

3. Your self-care routine should enhance your lifestyle

Furthermore, it’s important to realize that your routine is meant to act as a stepping stone towards your self-care journey, helping to develop your self-love and self-confidence.

So, if certain activities don’t do that, you might want to consider letting go of them.

Why is self-care important in a daily routine?

Before diving into that, I think it’s important to note that self-care is not central to selfishness.

So don’t feel bad for prioritizing yourself from time to time. The reason why self-care has become such an important thing to me is that it has become a wonderful source for stress management.

Being a type A girlie, navigating change was like a recipe for disaster. I couldn’t cope. Around that time, I discovered how slowing down can be a good thing.

Here are a couple of things to keep in mind in case you’re still on the fence about incorporating self-care in your daily life.

1. Self-care: a source of calmness

Most of us may feel like we’re on a hamster wheel: work, school, relationships, and endless responsibilities.

It’s no secret that they can take an extreme toll on our minds and bodies. I’ve experienced the aftermath of this constant hustle culture era, and burnout is not pretty.

So, in those moments where I needed to focus on myself, I found a friend in self-care.

With that in mind, I was able to navigate things better, and by better, I meant at a low and steady pace, just right for me. That is what I want for you, too.

Self-care is also important because it helps you take charge of identifying your needs. That’s what happened to me, too.

I was able to identify my needs and, therefore, created a routine to address them. With self-care, I saw that you can’t pour from an empty cup.

You need to see self-care as a method of refilling the capacity you need to be fully present so you can show up and show out to the world.

How to create your daily self-care routine

Follow this guide to help you be on your way to developing your self-care guide to implement daily to your routine or however often you need to.

Step 1: Be honest with yourself so you can identify your needs

This step is about the evaluation of where you are currently in your life.

For starters, it’s no secret that life has this reputation of throwing some curveballs our way.

So, the source of stress could pretty much be from almost anything: school, work, and life changes you may be going through. And I’m sure you can also relate.

By this, I mean you could identify a time in your life when you felt like your mental well-being and overall health had taken a serious knock.

So, for example, you may feel like you’ve been experiencing fatigue because of the demands of your new job.

Here is a simple way to be as honest as you can with yourself. You’re new, still adapting, and, well, you’re still not there yet.

So, you feel the pressure to keep up with the workplace culture, which has been stressful, to say the least.

As a result, the aftermath of that stress has manifested itself in the form of fatigue.

Just like that, you have managed to identify the problem, enabling you to move to the next step.

Step 2: Write down a self-care to-do list

As previously expressed, self-care isn’t about a one-size-fits-all approach. Identifying our specific needs will give you room to address them with clarity.

As we continue with the previous example, you have identified fatigue to be the issue and the reasons behind it. Now, you can proceed to start addressing it with the use of a checklist.

Think about how your issue could be resolved. So, if fatigue is an issue, you might think more sleep could help.

Here’s an example of how you could write it down:

“So, although I can’t go full force and just go to bed whenever I want to, a more immediate approach would be taking naps for a couple of minutes daily.”

From an example like this, you see that on your to-do list, you need to make time to take a power nap in your self-care plan.

Step 3: Plan how to implement your new self-care habit.

Now, here comes the meat of this whole self-care guide: implementing the idea. It’s time to put that idea into motion.

Let’s assume you have figured out what you need. After clearly writing the possible solution, you need to decide how, when, and for how long you are going to implement this idea.

So, considering our example, this could be a way to plan it.

Step 4: Track your progress

Starting anything new is intimidating. However, I don’t want you to lose focus and start channeling all your energy into becoming a master of this new habit.

Remember that with self-care, you are not in competition with anyone. So, start small and see how you’re progressing.

Now, let’s return to our example to see how you’ll plan to implement your self-care habit. Let’s say it’s been a week since you’ve been taking those power naps.

Evaluate what difference you have identified.

Do you feel more energetic?

Has your fatigue decreased?

If so, great…keep going, but if not, don’t be afraid to go back to the drawing board.

Conclusion

Starting a self-care routine can feel intimidating, but I have broken it down into simple steps. I hope I have made it easy for you to follow.

Keep in mind that self-care isn’t about perfection but creating a space for you to recharge and thrive in your own way.

I would love to know if you are excited to start your self-care routine. Share in the comments which self-care habits you enjoy the most and why.

If you found value in this, please share it with anyone you think might need a self-care boost.

Until next time, remember that self-care is always in vogue.
