Your role in goal setting: take charge in steps to achieve your goals
In case the idea of goal setting sounds a bit overwhelming, here’s a simple breakdown.
Simply put, setting goals acts like a formula to help you lead to the outcome you’re hoping to experience.
Furthermore, it goes beyond just listing steps to help you get there.
My experience taught me that you also need important character elements to help you get there as well. These include determination, wisdom, and consistency.
The benefits of having steps to achieve goals
1. Goal setting helps you feel less overwhelmed
Let’s be real: working on dreams to become a reality is daunting.
I’m sure there were moments where you thought, ‘Where do I even begin?’. Well, I’m sure most of us have been there.
Additionally, it’s tougher when that dream pushes you out of your comfort zone.
Without outlining the proper goals, your goals will feel like a mammoth task.
However, with the right goal strategy, it will turn the whole process into more bite-sized pieces.
2. Having the right steps for goal setting to achieve keeps you motivated
Going back to how overwhelming a goal can be, it cannot only be scary but can also be a major setback.
If you don’t implement the proper steps and break your goal down into a more doable process, this can lead you to often giving up.
I had this approach with my self-care journey. The better I felt, the more motivated I felt to try something new.
But this doesn’t have to be the case.
Additionally, these steps can help you stay motivated to continue towards your goals, especially when things get tough on the road to progress.
3. Setting the right goals can help you focus
Having the right steps to help you achieve your goals not only motivates you but can also give you a sense of direction.
I certainly saw this in my own goals concerning embracing self-care in my mental health and goal-setting journey.
The goals I listed gave me a sense of direction. I didn’t feel lost when it came to implementing self-care practices.
They act like a compass to guide you to where you want to be. Also, it’s a great bonus if these goals are heavily aligned with your purpose.
After all, without it, how else will you help yourself keep going? Let goal setting be your binoculars towards where you’re going.
4. Steps to help your goals can give you a creative boost
Goals are the turbo-boosters that fire up your drive and ignite your creative spark.
With goals, you can transform those hush-hush dreams into real-world victories.
The Almighty has placed those virtuous aspirations in your heart. Why not take a shot at setting objectives to reach them?
Those dreams can come true!
5. Steps to achieve goals can boost your overall well-being
Having goals to achieve not only helps you feel purposeful but can produce positive elements as well.
Think about it. When having a goal, you may feel positive about doing something meaningful.
That’s the case for me. Goals give me a sense to get up each morning and to just give my best in my pursuits.
That, for me, gives a sense of positivity in my life.
Also, that could be the case for you, too. You may find that goals help you feel more grounded to contribute to the world, too.
So with that being said, let’s get into how the SMART goal approach can help you get there.
SMART steps to achieve goals effectively
The SMART goal strategy is one of the well-known goal-setting standards. It’s designed to help us have an easy approach towards our goals.
A study found that this approach can help you stay organized and on track.
While learning about this, here’s my perspective on how to use this approach in your goal journey.
That way, we can head towards our goals practically and strategically.
So, if you’ve never heard of this strategy, here’s a simple breakdown:
1. Specific
This one is about being clear on your goals. It’s helpful to narrow them down to know what you want to achieve specifically.
So, for example, if reading more is your goal, decide what about reading you want to achieve.
More knowledge, more intellectual inspiration, or you just want to explore a new genre.
Or is it fitness? What about fitness do you want to achieve? Flexibility or strength training?
Write it down.
2. Measurable
This step has to do with making sure your goal is doable to achieve.
Instead of diving full force into your goals, you need to break them down into smaller steps. That way, you don’t become overwhelmed and probably give up.
So, back to the reading example. Instead of wanting to read 24 books in a year, that may not be realistic for you.
Instead, you could commit to reading one book per month for the year. Although it may not be as impressive as 24 books, you’re still able to commit to your goals more readily.
Or is it setting realistic fitness goals? Perhaps, getting up 3 days a week, just to go to the gym, may be more than enough.
As long as it’s attainable for you.
3. Achievable
Here, it’s all about staying on track based on what you’ve decided you want to achieve.
Because the measurable step has set the right foundation to get there, the achievable step will take the heap of pressure off your back.
So, if reading more books is what you want to do, how will you get started reading those monthly books?
Perhaps, it may be a good idea to head to a bookstore or local library to make it happen.
Also, perhaps a 15-minute home workout is doable for you until you feel ready to work with a trainer.
So, whatever your goal is, make it doable. That way, you don’t feel overwhelmed or frozen by it.
Just remember to keep it reachable.
4. Realistic
Sometimes, along the journey of wanting to achieve your goals, certain unforeseen events may happen.
As a result, this may set you back on how fast you want to achieve your goal. It’s no secret that although we may have goals and dreams to achieve, none of us knows what tomorrow holds.
So, remember that you may need to be open to adjusting your goals if need be.
Just do so from a place of love and not judgment.
5. Time-based
Having a time frame on how long you desire to achieve your goals is important.
However, I want to caution you not to set an unrealistic time frame for your goal.
Back to our reading example, it may take some 8 months to read those books, and you may think this may not work for you, but maybe 12.
Or you could give yourself 6 months to get used to your routine before adding adjustments. If it works for you, stick to it.
Just remember to be kind to yourself when learning how to stay consistent with goals you’ve set. Don’t be hard on yourself.
There is no need to rush or compare yourself to others at all.
