After all, we’re human and sometimes, we can’t help but notice what’s around us while trying to deal with our problems. A study shows that comparison may be the result of social anxiety.

Also, being surrounded by other people makes comparison a harsh reality.

Coming to that point isn’t easy. It may be rooted in the feeling of not quite measuring up.

As seen earlier, comparison to others comes naturally.

However, treading carefully is crucial because it rarely produces good fruit. If left unchecked, comparing yourself to others can often lead to toxic mindsets.

Also, if you suffer from comparison, do you notice patterns of jealousy, self-obsession, and low self-esteem?

Perhaps, before recognizing this, you find yourself feeling terrible about yourself because of a temporary highlight reel.

I certainly relate to this feeling, and let me tell you, it doesn’t have to be this way.

The whole comparison game is about how we see ourselves.

When it comes to comparing ourselves to others, there’s often an issue of contentment in our lives.

What makes this worse is that we are surrounded by tools like social media, which magnify comparison.

It rears its head in many ways: from comparing your Instagram followers, career progress, or how your appearance is to others.

I say this because this was my experience for a long time. Read on to find out how comparison wasn’t good for me at all.



The aftermath of comparing myself to others

Looking back, I now see that comparison messed with my self-esteem. I spent many years being subconsciously envious of others.

Sometimes, it got so bad that I became obsessed with becoming as good as those I was comparing myself to.

Furthermore, this became a spiral that led me to overdo everything.

No matter how much I did, I felt like I couldn’t measure up to these unrealistic expectations I put on myself.

My breakthrough with comparing myself to others

Living like this only brought misery and self-hatred. Those feelings of misery were the worst because I was missing out on the blessings around me.

Thankfully, by God’s grace, I recognized my struggle with comparison and started healing.

Dealing with that led me to embrace my uniqueness instead of fighting it.

Coming out of that cocoon was freeing in more ways than one.



How social media envy amplifies the comparison of yourself to others

These days, social media has become a norm of everyday life for most of us.

Also, being bombarded by a curation of realities crafted by people can often lead to a distorted idea of what reality is. The endless scrolling can often mess with our heads.

Eventually, you may start putting pressure on yourself to keep up with others and their seemingly perfect lives.

Without knowing, your authenticity could be attacked because of comparison.

I know this because this was my way of life for a while.

Here are 3 tips that I have come up with to help you kick comparison to the curb and start feeling confident in your own skin.

1. Limit negative social influences

When it comes to mental health, having good priorities is key.

So, when it comes to personal connections, you must ask yourself what’s more important.

Is wasting time snooping on someone else’s life important, or clearing the clutter getting in the way of loving yourself?

Take a moment to breathe and think about this.

If being around a certain group of people breeds jealousy, it may be time to step away.



2. Unfollow toxic accounts

Take stock of your social media feed, as this can be a game-changer. Social media is a daily norm, and having boundaries with it is even more important.

If being on social media is hurting your self-esteem, it may be time to have a social media detox.

After this break, consider unfollowing accounts that breed comparison.

3. Practice daily gratitude

After unfollowing accounts that bring you down, use that time for scrolling to reflect on gratitude.

As much as comparison can breed dissatisfaction, being grateful is the perfect way to fight back.

With thankfulness, you’ll start to view your life from a positive perspective and see all the amazing things you’ve been blessed with.

That’s when you may realize that things aren’t as dismal as the comparison made them seem to be.

Try listing, even as little as 3 things you’re grateful for.



Turn comparison with others into motivation.

Let’s face it, many of us strive to be the best version of ourselves, and that’s okay.

However, our ideal version of ourselves can often stem from wrong expectations.

With a change in mindset, you won’t be at the mercy of comparison anymore. It’s okay to find motivation in what you see.

However, you need to be cautious.

Just remember to exercise self-awareness so you won’t fall for comparison again.

Comparison may be the thief of joy, but you can turn that perspective around.
